Getting a dog for the first time is a big deal, especially if you weren’t raised around animals or pets. Getting a puppy is exciting and yet it comes with so much responsibility. But if you’ve thoroughly thought through why you want a dog and it is the right fit, then we’re sure you have some of these common questions for new dog owners on your mind.

Let’s take a look at a few of the top questions of new puppy parents.

What do I need in my home for a puppy?

There’s a lot to get ready for your new family member, from puppy proofing your house to making sure you have all the supplies. Then there are the fun toys that you can’t resist as you peruse the aisles at the pet store. If you want a basic list of what you should have on hand at the very beginning, here’s one.

What about food and eating frequency?

First, it’s best to talk to either your breeder or your vet about what food would be appropriate for your new puppy. Puppies definitely need food that is made specifically for their growing brains and bodies and immune systems. Beyond that, frequency of feeding changes over time, but puppies are generally fed smaller amounts more often. Again, ask your breeder or your vet to help you create a feeding schedule.

Is my puppy sleeping too much?

Probably not. Puppies sleep a ton. Again, they are growing so fast and that takes a lot of energy. When they’re awake, you can see how much energy they use! Sometimes we can be grateful that they sleep so much. ((ha)) But typically a puppy sleeps about 15 to 20 hours a day. (Wouldn’t some humans love that schedule!?)

When is it okay to start socializing my puppy?

Before you introduce your puppy to other unknown dogs – for example on any kind of play date or at a dog park – make sure they’ve been to the vet and are caught up with vaccinations. Also, consider your puppy’s personality before you start introducing too many other animals. It’s import to socialize them starting at a young age, but you also don’t want to overdo it and create unnecessary anxiety.

How often should I bathe my puppy?

This is another great question for your breeder or your vet, because there are multiple factors involved, including what kind of coat they have. Typically, though, it’s not recommended that you bathe your dog more than once every three to four weeks. And make sure that you’re using puppy specific soap. Human soap is not good for dogs. And you should get into good grooming habits right from the start so your dog eventually learns to enjoy this time with you.

Should I do any kind of dog training?

A well trained dog is a happy dog. Dogs love to understand boundaries and they love routines. You’re not only doing yourself a favor when you get professional training; you’re also making your dog feel safe and secure.
